World Press Photo 2008

The exhibition of winning photographs in the world-famous competition of photo journalists was held at the VINZAVOD Moscow Centre of Contemporary Art. This exhibition is a unique journey composed of 200 works by the winners of the most prestigious international competition of photo journalists the “World Press Photo". The 51st final was held in Amsterdam in February 2008. The exhibition covers the most important events of 2007.

The World Press Photo 2008 “Photograph of the Year" award was given to the British photographer Tim Hetherington. The photograph, taken on September 15, 2007, features an American soldier resting in the Restrepo bunker, named after a soldier from his platoon who was recently killed by insurgents. The 2nd Battalion Airborne of the 503rd US infantry is undergoing a deployment in the Korengal Valley in the Eastern province of Afghanistan. The photograph was part of a photo spread he did for Vanity Fair.

59 photographers from the following 23 countries were named winners in 10 different categories: Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, China, Poland, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Holland, UK, USA and Zimbabwe.

Among the 2008 winning photos are: Dutch photographer Peter Ten Hoopen’s photo spread on the city of Kitezh, and the portrait of the Russian ex-president Vladimir Putin, taken by the famous British photographer of Greek origin Platon. Another winner of the competition this year was the Russian photo journalist Vladimir Vyatkin, with his portrait of the 100-year-old choreographer Igor Moiseev and his wife Irina.

In St. Petersburg the exhibition will be on at the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg till August 5, 2008.
