This unique monument of architecture in the heart of the capital is a modern business and cultural center, where international exhibitions, grandiose shows and presentations are held.
History
Construction of the Moscow Manege began in 1817, in honor of the fifth anniversary of the victory over Napoleon, by personal decree of Tsar Alexander I. The unique building was erected on Mokhovaya Square, where hay, moss and logs were sold.
The architect was the Spaniard Augustin Betancourt, and the supervisor was engineer-general Lev Karbonier. The project for the façade and interior design of the building was developed by architect Osip Bove. The Manege was opened officially on 30 November 1817. The Manege confidently joined the list of masterpieces of world architecture.
The Manege was very spacious, and initially it was planned to hold military inspections, parades and training in the building. But from 1831, only “peaceful” events were held at the Manege – artistic and industrial exhibitions, festivals and balls. For example, in 1867 a concert was held here which drew an audience of 12,000 people, and the orchestra and choir were conducted by Hector Berlioz and Nikolai Rubinstein.
A drastic turning point in the history of the Manege took place after the October revolution of 1917. The cultural space was turned into a garage for government officials. Only in 1957 was the Manege turned back into an exhibition hall.
The present day
On 14 March 2004, a fire broke out at the Manege. Only the walls of the building survived. The new Manege exhibition complex was opened on 18 April 2005.
