Marat Safin. Before and after the match.

Marat Safin. Before and after the match.

At the moment, Russian tennis player Marat Safin heads the ATP men’s singles rankings. Here’s what Safin has to say about tennis and the life surrounding it.

On Kafelnikov
We’re playing for Russia, and in order for everything to work right, we need to get along well with each other. I heard that Alik Metrevyeli and Vadim Borisov were always arguing about who was more important. There’s none of that going on with us. I know that Zhenya is our number one. He’s older and has more experience. And sometimes we even train together, so everything is just fine with us.

On tennis
I dedicate all my energy and all my time to tennis. I like the fact that I have a real goal (if you work, for example, in a bank, what kind of goals can you have?). I live and train in Geneva. Swiss tennis player Marc Rosset, who I consider to be a good friend, told me that the city was nice and that it had all the necessary training facilities. I thought about it and decided to move there.

On restaurants
I like restaurants where the food is good and the atmosphere as well. In Moscow there are lots of such places.

On food
I prefer Russian, French, and Japanese food. The main thing is that it tastes good. I love borsch and sushi. They’re the best in my opinion. For now, I don’t need any special diets. But it’s important that my meals are balanced.
