Jewelry art of India in the era of the Mughal Emperors

The exhibition “Treasure of the world. Jewelry of India in the era of the Mughal Emperors” will be held from 20 February to 22 May in the Assumption Belfry of the Moscow Kremlin. The organizers of the exhibition are the Al-Sabah Collection, Dar al-Atar al-Islamia, the National Council for culture, art and literature, and the National museum of Kuwait. The exhibition will be held at the Kremlin under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Sabah-al-Ahmad al Jaber al-Sabah, the emir of Kuwait, and is the first demonstration of such significance of the cultural legacy of Kuwait in Russia for the past two decades. The collection of jewels of the rulers of India from the era of the Mughal Empire (16th-18th centuries) was gathered for over 40 years by members of the ruling al-Sabah family in Kuwait, and was then handed over to the National museum of Kuwait. After the bombing and annexation of the country by Iraq, the treasure of the Mughal Empire was moved out of the county, and later returned, but with certain losses. More than 60 items are still missing.

The exhibition features over 250 unique items which were once part of the treasure of the rulers of the Mughal Empire. Valuable daggers, pendants, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and caskets decorated with rubies, emeralds and diamonds bear witness to the incredible diversity of jewelry techniques and methods, mainly using enamel and incrustations, which were used by Indian craftsmen in the 16th-18th centuries.
